Is frozen yogurt healthy?

Frozen yogurt is naturally lower in calories and fat than traditional frozen desserts.  Also, by using the self-serve business model, we allow portion control which allows the customer to get exactly what they want.  

I'm lactose intolerant. Should I avoid frozen yogurt?

According to the National Institutes of Health, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the bacterial cultures in yogurt “convert lactose to lactic acid, so the yogurt may be well-tolerated due to a lower lactose content than yogurt without live cultures.” So, if you are mildly lactose intolerant and able to eat refrigerated yogurt, look for frozen yogurt with live and active cultures. For more severe cases of lactose intolerance, opt for sorbet or vegan frozen yogurt.

What are the health benefits of frozen yogurt consumption? What are the benefits of live and active cultures?

Not all frozen yogurt is the same, so the health benefits will vary. Generally speaking, frozen yogurt is a good source of calcium and lower in fat and calories than ice cream. It can contain high amounts of sugar.

Frozen yogurt that contains live and active cultures has additional benefits as described by the National Yogurt Association:

“Researchers around the world are studying the potential attributes of live and active culture yogurt in preventing gastrointestinal infections, boosting the body’s immune system, fighting certain types of cancer and preventing osteoporosis. More research must be done to establish a definitive link between live and active culture yogurt and these health effects, but the results to date are encouraging.” (Source: National Yogurt Association)

Our flavors are always changing for each season.  It is best to check our website and Facebook page as we will keep those updated with what flavors are being currently being offered.

What frozen sweets and treats does Yotopia offer?

Starting June 1st, we will offer ice cream, frozen yogurt, Italian ice, frozen custard, sorbet, milkshakes, protein smoothies, and homemade fudge.  Other new offerings will be posted as we add them to our selection.

What is the difference between ice cream and frozen yogurt?

By United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards, a food labeled “ice cream” should have at least 20 percent milk solids and 10 percent milk fat by weight. Premium brands are fattier, typically 14 to 18 percent. Both milk and cream are used. Sweeteners account for another 15 percent or so.

Frozen yogurt blends yogurt (milk fermented with yogurt cultures) with an ice cream base of milk, cream and sweetener. The resulting dessert is both sweet and tangy, cold and creamy. If made with live cultures, frozen yogurt promotes digestive health by encouraging the growth of “friendly” bacteria in the intestinal tract.

What is gelato?

Gelato hails from Italy, and its name is simply the Italian word for “frozen.” Gelato traditionally is made using mostly or entirely milk. Having little or no cream reduces fat while intensifying flavors. Gelato’s melt-in-the-mouth creaminess comes from sheer density: It’s churned with relatively little added air.

What is frozen custard?

A touch of egg yolk is what distinguishes frozen custard from commercial ice cream. Legally, custard only has to contain 1.4 percent egg yolk by weight, but some brands have more. The lecithin in the yolk is a natural emulsifier, imparting a richer, creamier texture.
